San Diego Comic-con

Shari and I will be attending Comic-Con International in San Diego this summer. Mostly going there for kicks, but we’re also helping promote our book at the SLG Booth. For a complete list of Comic-Con attendees, see the Conventions and Signings page of the SLG website.

Kelsie keeps saying we need a gimmick to be remembered. I shall be the guy with the baby monkey on his head.

You may not remember my face, but you WILL remember the monkey!!

While the official release date is (was!) May 2nd, in reality it seems to be that you might not be able to pick one up from usual book store until the end of May in most case. So if you couldn’t find any, ask the store if they will stock it or try again next month, or just order online either through SLG directly or from Amazon.

*disheartening*

The Healing gets more praise

From the blog pages of PurityBrown:

Fehed Said & Shari Chankhamma’s “The Healing” is just beautiful: evocative, moody, and with that sense of inevitability to the final plot twist that doesn’t prevent it from being surprising;

And that was from a gal who has “two degrees in philosophy”!!

From the pages of Maehara.co.uk:

[...] another beautifully-drawn fantasy strip that takes a stab at the old premise of being careful what you wish for, in case you get it.

Found an LJ post too which has a nice bullet-point style review:

- 48 page comic by writer/artist team, fehed and shari (heh – just had to re-write fehed instead of fred ^_~ )
- has a fantasy theme, detailed artwork, and altho its not a silent comic it doesn’t overdo the narrative ^^
- i can see a definate manga influence, but twinned with a western horror/cute influence…like the guy behind invader zim [...]
- the artwork has a lot of lovely detail…but i think the tone/shading lets it down just slightly – a little more contrast might have made it easier to immediately see what’s going on, rather than poring over it for a while…
- i liked the ending – nice twist…i wanna his adventures next XD

Couple of ups and downs with that last one, but it’s fair to have mixed opinions. We know it’s not perfect, but it’s the end result that either makes a story good, or sinks it. And this reader in the end seems to be hooked. I give that a thumbs up!

So for those of you who haven’t picked up the book yet, Go Freakin’ Buy It Online! Or next time you’re in a bookstore, hunt around for it ^^

NEO Magazine review

Managed to get a scan of the review from NEO Magazine concerning Best New Manga. Thanks to Rik & Wing for that. Quite a few of the comics in the book get a mention in this.

We got a mention too, though it’s tiny it’s a mention none-the-less lol They basically say “This comic is manga” about our story. Thanks for the update XD nah, they do say that we’re part of the list of comics they appreciate.

Min Kwon’s Haru-Sari and Fehed Said & Shari Chankhamma’s The Healing evoke a more traditional manga style and feel yet all possess their own unique slant on the medium.

I thought some of you might appreciate reading the full thing. Click here to download it.

“a well-realised fantasy world”

Got a nice little mention in a review at MangaLife concerning our short piece in Best New Manga:

Fehed Said and Shari Chankhamma’s The Healing is another strong self-contained story, particularly in its successful creation of a well-realised fantasy world in just a handful of pages. The art is delicate, yet has a grotesque look appropriate to the setting, and the character and environment designs are interesting and evocative. The plot is a little predictable in places, but even so, the story packs a considerable emotional punch.

Also got a small mention on a blog:

The Healing by Fehed Said & Shari Chankhama, a fantastically realised story that if I described it any more, would rob it of it’s gravitas.

We got a mention in NEO magazine too, which I’ll try to grab this week. They gave Best New Manga a 4 out of 5. Sweet!

I guess fantasy may very well be our strongest genre. I have to admit, I do like writing surreal stories set in fantasy realms more than anything else I’ve attempted. It’s damn hard though, as you really are designing a whole world as opposed to just a handful of characters.
